October 16, 2024–Emily Heidesch’s Computer Science II class completed a travel app called LCC Travel, named for the three senior students in the class who made it: Lucas, Caleb, and Cade. The boys chose travel as their subject because they felt it “was something everyone was interested in.”
In order to make their app, they started by making a paper prototype and tested it out by bringing it to people and having them pretend to use it. If the user was confused, they made changes. The pictures on the prototype were drawings and the buttons were handwritten.
Their final project was shared via code.org’s App Lab, complete with photos and working buttons. App Lab is a programming environment where you can make simple apps right in the browser, using JavaScript, with either blocks or text.
The final product was a success–it was usable and worked! The boys found a bug in their app when they presented it, but accepted it with good humor. App development is a challenging business!
Computer Science II builds on Computer Science I, in which students built a website and a game.
