An Education Savings Account (ESA) is a deposit of public funds into government-authorized savings accounts that eligible families may use to cover tuition, fees, and other qualified education expenses at accredited private schools in Iowa. Parents who enroll their eligible children in an accredited private school will receive $7,826 per pupil for the 2024-2025 school year.
Year 2: School Year 2024-2025
Q. My child is enrolling in Transitional Kindergarten. Are they eligible for ESA funding?
A. Yes. Transitional Kindergarten students should fill out the ESA application.
Q. My children are currently enrolled in a public school. Do they qualify for ESA funding even if we are above the income thresholds?
A. Yes. All students who currently attend a public school and choose to enroll in an accredited private school for the 2024-25 school year are eligible regardless of income.
Q. We homeschool our children. If we enroll them in an accredited nonpublic school, are they eligible for an ESA?
A. Yes, they would be eligible regardless of income as long as they are enrolled as full-time students at an accredited nonpublic school.
Q. I have two students who will be attending an Iowa-accredited nonpublic school in the 2024-25 school year. Do I have to create an application for each student?
A. No. Only one application per family is needed. Parents/guardians can add multiple students from their household onto their application.
Q. Who sees my application information?
A. Application information will only be viewed by parties necessary to complete the application verification and approval process., which includes Odyssey, the Iowa Department of Education, and the Iowa Department of Revenue.
Q. How do I complete the application if my child lives in a split household?
A. The first parent or guardian to apply who meets the eligibility requirements will be the parent or guardian under which the ESA will be established.
Q. Will I need to complete an ESA application each year?
A. Yes. Families will need to apply annually to continue receiving the funding.
Q. If my student was eligible for the 2023-24 school year, will they remain eligible again for the next school year?
A. Once a student is eligible for ESA funding, they will remain eligible going forward (even if they do not meet the income requirements) as long as they are enrolled in an accredited private school. To remain eligible for the funding, an application needs to be submitted each year.
